Pharmacists have compiled a list of some of the most recommended over-the-counter products for treatment of everything from diabetes and colds/allergies to diagnostic products and those used for the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. In the latest OTC Guide, published annually by Pharmacy Times, pharmacists weigh in on the products that line drugstore aisles in an effort to help consumers make smart decisions when it comes to over-the-counter products.

Standout winners in diabetes health included Capzasin for diabetic neuropathy, Nature Made diabetic multivitamins, and Insta-Glucose oral glucose product.
For allergies, colds, and coughs pharmacists recommend Claritin (antihistamine), Cepacol for colds, and Sudafed as a decongestant.
What’s best for inflammation and/or pain? According to pharmacists, the best medicine for a headache is Excedrin. For those who suffer from migraines, Excedrin Migraine. The top choice in anti-inflammatory drug? Advil.
For babies and children, pharmacists chose Enfamil as the best infant formula, Chloraseptic (children’s formulation) for sore throats, and Children’s Dimetapp for cold/cough combinations.
When it comes to topically applied products, Neutrogena seems to be a favorite of pharmacists for sunscreens and acne products. For chapped or cracked lips, a products that’s been around for decades is still a favorite – Carmex.
What about stomach and gastrointestinal (GI) issues? Pharmacists prefer Tums as an antacid, Emetrol for relief of nausea, and good old Pepto-Bismol for an upset stomach.
OTC diagnostic products pharmacists prefer most include Omron for both blood pressure monitors and peak flow meters. When it comes to lancets or devices for blood sampling, OneTouch was the winner.
Consumers often roam the aisles in the drugstore, not aware that pharmacists are highly knowledgeable regarding OTC medications and health products.
