As more states update their building regulations, mass timber in commercial construction is experiencing significant growth. Recent numbers tallied in a construction industry report by WoodWorks confirm the growing use of mass timber:
“As of September 2022, more than 1,500 multifamily, commercial, and institutional mass timber projects had been constructed or were in design across all 50 states, an increase of over 25% from the previous year.”
Mass timber is a term often used interchangeably with engineered wood and refers to large structural panels, columns, and beams made of multiple layers of lumber bonded together. These building components possess remarkable strength and stability, making them suitable for use in various types of structures, including commercial and residential buildings.
Advances in timber technology make more options available to architects, builders and developers while promoting sustainability and offering new possibilities for aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound buildings.
A recent story on NBC News provided more details on using Mass Timber in high-rise construction.
“Builders are increasingly turning away from concrete and steel in favor of wood. In some cases, the material – known as mass timber – is even being used to construct skyscrapers. It’s becoming a sort of revolution: a 2021 study in the journal ‘Sustainability’ found that mass timber buildings could reduce a building’s carbon emissions 22 to 50 percent compared to concrete.”
Like all engineered wood products, mass timber demands proper coding and marking systems to adhere to regulatory standards while ensuring a seamless manufacturing, distribution, and building process.
