At the groundbreaking ceremony on July 17, Rex Lumber Co. announced it will bring about 110 jobs to Pike County in Alabama when it begins operations at a new sawmill in June of 2019. News reports say the company is investing $110 million in the facility located near Troy.

The state-of-the-art sawmill is expected to produce a minimum of 240 million board feet annually, bringing more money to timber owners in the area. Rex Lumber considered several other potential sites for the facility in other Southern states, choosing the 214 acre site in Pike County. The third sawmill expansion for the company since 2001, Rex Lumber currently produces 575 million board feet each year at its Mississippi and Florida facilities.

Governor Ray Ivey said Alabama is thrilled to have been chosen for the project, which will generate significant economic benefits for the lumber industry in the county while providing high-quality jobs. The new sawmill is expected to use about 600 tractor-trailer loads of wood on a weekly basis in producing Southern yellow pine for use in the construction industry.

Rex Lumber Company is among the top 10 largest U.S. producers of softwood lumber and was founded almost 100 years ago by the W.D. McRae family of Graceville, FL who still own and operate the company today.
