Westervelt Co., a 130-year-old Alabama lumber manufacturing company located in Tuscaloosa, recently announced its plans to construct a new lumber mill that is expected to produce 250 million board feet of lumber on a yearly basis while creating over 100 new employment opportunities. While the specific location of the new lumber mill was not revealed other than it will be located in south Alabama, the company said its board of directors should give final approval for the new facility in the near future.
Currently Westervelt has a Moundville lumber facility that produces southern yellow pine, said to be the second-largest production facility of this type of wood in the U.S. News reports state the new lumber mill will complement the Moundville facility.
The company was originally founded as Prairie State Paper Corp. in South Bend, IN in 1884 by Herbert Westervelt. Westervelt relocated the company to Tuscaloosa in 1927 where it became known as Gulf States Paper Corp. Currently led by the family’s fourth generation, the company has been known as Westervelt Co. for 12 years.
President and CEO at Westervelt Co. Brian Luoma said that the company has a lengthy history in the manufacturing of lumber and environmental stewardship. He went on to say in a news release that the expansion of the business will continue to build on the legacy, and that Westervelt focuses on growing their lumber business to support its growing number of customers.
