Georgia-Pacific recently announced it had chosen a new site for the company’s new lumber production facility in Albany, GA. According to news reports, work will soon begin on the 320,000 square feet plant in the Albany-Dougherty Industrial Park.
The plant is expected to cost about $150 million, with the investment from the company going into the city’s economy according to the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, who will partner with Georgia-Pacific and the state of Georgia to create the lumber processing facility. Lumber processed at the plant is reportedly for the American market.
A spokesperson for Georgia-Pacific said the Albany-Dougherty Industrial Park location had everything the company needs including roads, railways, a good infrastructure and highly intelligent people from which to pull its workforce. The processing facility is expected to have an annual payroll of approximately $5 million and will employ about 130 people. In all, it is anticipated that about 340 jobs in the state would be supported when the facility is complete considering the need for truck drivers, materials providers and more.
Georgia-Pacific is headquartered in Atlanta and currently has 18 facilities in Georgia including one in Albany that’s been in operation for 37 years.
According to the company’s website, the Albany facility is Georgia-Pacific’s third new softwood lumber mill announcement in the last year. The two prior investments are at Warrenton, GA and Talladega, AL.
