Steel That Built Mercedes-Benz Stadium

MLT CreativeIndustry News

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a structural steel masterpiece. Completed in July 2018, it boasts the world’s largest halo board and is one of only a handful of American football stadiums with a retractable roof.

In a trip to the roof, Bill Darden, President of Darden & Company, the project-management firm overseeing development of the stadium for Falcons and Atlanta United owner Arthur Blank, stated “It’s just an incredibly one-of-a-kind thing.” In the roof alone “there are 4,000 tons of steel in these eight petals…(They) have very tight tolerances between the bogies and the rails. They can’t be (loose), like you see in an amusement park sometimes. It’s very precise. I was in a meeting earlier this week, and we were literally talking about 1/16th and 1/32nd of an inch.”

In total, the stadium includes approximately 27,000 tons of steel—18,000 tons of steel in the fixed roof, 4,000 tons in the retractable portion, 4,000 tons in the “skin” of the building and 580 tons to support the video board. When working with steel and pipes, especially on a project of this scope, receiving the correct parts on time is critical.
