Recently it was announced that Virginia-based Culpeper Wood Preservers had purchased the residential lumber division assets of Cox Industries, a pressure-treated wood products manufacturer in Orangeburg, S.C. The sale includes manufacturing plants based in Cove City and Coleridge, NC, along with South Carolina Branchville and Orangeburg locations.
Cox Industries will reportedly continue to oversee the industrial division of its operation and retain the corporate headquarters, while uniting its residential business with Culpeper. According to Michael Johnson, CEO of Cox Industries, this move will result in an industry powerhouse with integrated manufacturing facilities and customers across the Midwestern and Eastern states. Johnson said that the company believes Culpeper operates it business in the way that Cox has for more than 75 years in terms of employee focus, and that foundational values similar to their own was a critical factor in entering into a transaction with another company.
Cox manufactures wood fences, docks, decks, retaining walls, utility poles and framing, among other wood products, and has been family-owned and operated for more than 40 years. By selling the residential division to Culpeper, the company hopes to focus more intensely on its industrial division and support marine and electrical infrastructure in the U.S., where it has become one of the largest utility pole providers from coast to coast.
Culpeper Wood Preservers focuses on pressure treated lumber for various applications including deck boards, dimensional lumber, plywood, fence panels and boards, heavy timbers for landscaping, porch flooring and more, partnering with Southern Yellow Pine producers to supply independent lumber dealers.
