Recently in timber news, it was announced that Carbon12, an 85-foot tall timber building in Portland, designed by PATH Architecture, with a focus on sustainability, has been completed. Companies are working to prove that timber is a good material for use in high-rise buildings, and one that has a smaller carbon footprint than concrete and steel. Carbon12 is a mixed-use building that includes residential units, along with retail at ground level and underground parking.
While Carbon12 is currently the tallest building constructed of timber in the country, it looks like another company will take the lead next winter when it completes the 12-story Framework building, which is said to be 148-foot tall. Designed by the Framework Project and LEVER Architecture, this building is also located in Portland.
In the Carbon12 building, PATH used cross-laminated lumber and glulam beams to surround a central steel core. Portland is experiencing an increase in demand for housing, and construction using prefabricated timber makes it possible to build at a faster pace than with traditional concrete and steel techniques. PATH also wanted to promote the local timer industry in designing Carbon12.
As far as the interior of residential units at Carbon12 go, undersides of cross-laminated timber slabs and wood columns/beams were left exposed, to make the interior spaces warmer and more appealing.
